Almost twenty years ago Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania demonstrated to the world something almost unbelievable - that the pace of history, the fate of states and nations can be changed without bloodshed and violence. That it is possible to change it in a legal and civilised, intelligent and spiritual manner. That was the way the Baltic people won the affection and appreciation from the international community. That was how Baltic people confirmed their moral strength, human and democratic potential not only to others, but also to themselves. On 23 August 1989 more than million people joined their hands in the Baltic Way from Tallinn to Vilnius. Estonian, Latvian and Lithuania people formed their freedom’s way, thus showing their unbending will for freedom, self-determination and democracy.
On 6 December 2008 the Baltic Assembly announced the year 2009 as the year of the 20th Anniversary of the Baltic Way. The Baltic Assembly has developed the logo of the 20th Anniversary of the Baltic Way.
