On 26-28 November 2009 in Vilnius, Lithuania the 28th Session of the Baltic Assembly and the 15th Baltic Council was held.
The economic and financial crisis in the world has left a deep footprint on the Baltic region. To tackle the most urgent issues, the Session of the Baltic Assembly concentrated on the matters which the Baltic countries need to address jointly in order to revitalize the competitiveness, development and sustainability of the Baltic countries. Within the Session the issues of partnership in the sectors of economic, social, business, education and many other areas were discussed, deliberating on the Baltic cooperation with the aim of ensuring stability in the Baltic region in long-term perspective. During the Session a diversity of views wiere voiced by bringing together over 150 invited participants from governmental, parliamentarian and non-governmental institutions from the Baltic, Benelux, Nordic and GUAM countries.
During the 28th Baltic Assembly Session the representatives from the committees and the Presidium reported on the activities over the year, and discussed recommendations and resolutions to the national governments, parliaments and the Baltic Council of Ministers on joint measures for development of common Baltic business environment, on increased cooperation of the Baltic States in the Schengen area; on ensuring sustainable economic and social development in the Baltic States; on development of education in alignment with labour market needs; and on increasing energy efficiency, energy saving and adapting to climate change.
Within the framework of the 28th Session of the Baltic Assembly the meetings of the Committees and the Presidium were also organized, and at the end of the Session the Final Document of the 28th Session of the Baltic Assembly was signed and the priorities of the Baltic Assembly for 2010 were defined.
During the 15th Baltic Council parliamentarians and governmental representatives discussed the report of the Baltic Council of Ministers on cooperation of the Baltic States in 2009 as well as priorities and working activities of the Baltic Council of Ministers in 2010. The Joint Statement of the 15th Baltic Council was be signed between the Baltic Assembly and the Baltic Council of Ministers.
The Baltic Assembly Prize Awarding ceremony was held on 27 November where winners of the Baltic Assembly prizes in Literature, Science and the Arts were awarded. This year the prize in Literature received Inga Ābele, the prize in the Arts obtained Marko Mäetamm, and the prize in Science was given to Leonardas Sauka.
