European Conference of Presidents of Parliament

On 24-25 October 2019 in Strasbourg, the European Conference of Presidents of Parliament was held.

Conference brought together Speakers and Presidents of the parliaments of the 47 member states of the Council of Europe. In this year’s conference, numerous topics were discussed: 1) Our Common European Home: the next 70 years; 2) Implementing the UN 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals: contribution by Parliaments; and 3) Women in politics and in the public discourse.

Baltic Assembly was represented by its President Jānis Vucāns. During his speech he reminded that foundation of the Council of Europe 70 years ago was based on common values - human rights, democracy and rule of law. Jānis Vucāns said that suspending and later uncritically restoring voting rights of Russia serves as a vivid example of the failure to safeguard European common values. With this step Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe has shown inconsistency in decision making, as well as powerlessness or unwillingness to protect human rights, democracy and rule of law. Mr Vucāns stressed out that the Baltic Assembly will continue to be an active participant in the processes of development of European home, as common European values are the cornerstone of the Baltic States and it is important to protect them.
