Discussing prospects of security and defence cooperation of the Baltic States

During the meeting of the Security and Defence Committee of the Baltic Assembly on 6 March 2020 in Tallinn, politicians and experts discussed prospects of security and defence cooperation of the Baltic States.

During the meeting, experts highlighted the importance of building air and naval defence capabilities as well as noted that regional approach is important in enhancing these capabilities in the Baltic States. Another important issue discussed thoroughly was joint military procurements of the Baltic States.

"For the Baltic States it is imperative to participate in each other’s defence initiatives. Contribution of the Baltic States to the national, regional, and allied security starts with individual and regional awareness of the responsibility," said Chair of the Committee Urve Tiidus.

Parliamentarians jointly with governmental representatives also discussed cooperation in external border control and management as well as cooperation in the field of disaster prevention, preparedness and response.

After the meeting recommendations of the Baltic Assembly will be formulated and adopted at the 39th Session on 5-6 November 2020 in Tallinn, Estonia.
