Members acknowledge the COVID-19 impact on the Baltic Assembly

On 25 September 2020, the digital meeting of the Consultative Council of the Baltic Assembly was be held.

During the meeting, parliamentarians discussed numerous issues, including COVID-19 impact on economies of the Baltic states. Members of the Baltic Assembly were introduced to a comparative review of socio-economic implications of COVID-19 in the Baltic states. Despite having obvious negative impact, it was also highlighted that pandemic (on the bright side) can provide new business opportunities and give remarkable impetus to positive structural changes.

Traditionally, members of the Presidium and Chairs of the Committees presented and discussed the results of the Estonian presidency. President of the Baltic Assembly Aadu Must and Chairs of the Committees noted that their work has significantly been impacted by the COVID-19 crisis. However, the Assembly was able to quickly adapt to the situation and reorganise and continue its the work in digital format, resulting with numerous recommendations of the Baltic Assembly to governments of Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia.

"By now the Baltic states have managed to overcome many difficulties. But still, after a low period in summer, current situation in the Baltic states remains unclear and unpredictable. We have to learn to live with COVID-19 and find solutions to cope with virus and crisis it has brought. And that it why there is a need to involve and hear what experts have to say," noted President of the Baltic Assembly.

During the meeting of the Consultative Council, there was also a debate about the priorities and agenda of the Lithuanian presidency in the Baltic Assembly in 2021. The programme of the Lithuanian presidency will focus on overcoming the impact of the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic in economy, social field, security, education and research and other areas of cooperation.

The meeting of the Consultative Council was held in preparation for the digital Session of the Baltic Assembly that will take place on 6 November 2020.
