Baltic Assembly attends the 70th Anniversary of the Benelux Parliament

On 5 November 2025, the Baltic Assembly attended the 70th anniversary of the Benelux Interparliamentary Assembly, which took place in Brussels, Belgium. The event brought together representatives from Benelux countries and partner parliaments to celebrate seven decades of cooperation and to discuss shared priorities for the future of regional and international collaboration.

Additionally, Vice President of the Baltic Assembly Timo Suslov, participated in the debate on “the importance of international cooperation in the field of defence,” where he highlighted that the Russian threat to the Baltic States is a challenge not only for the region but for wider Europe. However, Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania have responded decisively by raising defence spending to at least five percent, establishing the Baltic Defence Line, and making joint military procurements. Public resilience is a core element of the Baltic security model, there is growing participation in civil defence activities and volunteer-based military organisations. However, extensive disinformation campaigns are prevalent, and Latvia and Estonia are tightening language-related regulations to counter these efforts.

Finally, he noted that strong cooperation begins with genuine friendship among political actors. By learning from one another, countries can better understand shared challenges. While the Baltic States can help the Benelux countries strengthen resilience, the Benelux partners, in turn, can share valuable experience in cross-border cooperation.
