Presidium of the Baltic Assembly participates at the meeting of the BSPC Standing Committee in Mariehamn

On 16-17 June 2025, parliamentarians from the Baltic States attended the BSPC Standing Committee meeting, which took place in Mariehamn, Åland Islands. Discussions revolved around a follow-up to the 33rd BSPC, results of the Working Group on Energy Security, Self-sustainability, Resilience, and Connectivity (ESSRC) so far, establishing a new BSPC Working Group after the 34th Annual Conference, the 34th BSPC and other related topics.

The meeting was chaired by the President of the BSPC Alfons Röblom and a presentation was provided by Susann Simolin, Director of the Åland Peace Institute, in which she described the region as a demilitarised zone and an example of how autonomy, minority protection and security arrangements can be successfully combined. She emphasised that addressing complex challenges requires multi-dimensional solutions, compromise, adherence to rules and a willingness to shift perspectives.

Continuing, parliamentarians discussed the follow-up to the 33rd BSPC, which received statements from the governments of Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania, Åland, Germany, Hamburg, Norway, Schleswig-Holstein and Sweden, as of the date of the meeting. However, the final report of the ESSRC Working Group will be finalised and presented during the 34th BSPC in Mariehamn and will include a summary with Key Findings and Policy Considerations from the survey results sent to the governments of the Baltic Sea region.

Regarding the new BSPC Working Group, which will be established after the 34th Annual Conference, the Baltic Assembly Presidium had previously agreed to present to the BSPC Standing Committee a proposal to establish a working group on Strengthening Cyber and Information Resilience. Therefore, this proposal will be included in the draft 34th BSPC resolution. Regarding the resolution, participants discussed the current proposals and provided further input for the preliminary draft.

During the meeting, the delegation of the Baltic Assembly consisted of President Jānis Vucāns, Vice President Giedrius Drukteinis and Members of the Presidium Ģirts Valdis Kristovskis and Enn Eesma.
