President stresses the importance of Baltic–Benelux cooperation for a stronger EU


On 19-20 March 2026, the Baltic Assembly in Luxembourg participated in the Session of the Benelux Parliament dedicated to regional cooperation, where representatives of the Benelux Parliament, Nordic Council, and European institutions discussed the future of integration, competitiveness, and resilience in Europe.

President of the Baltic Assembly Timo Suslov stressed the importance of cooperation between the Baltic States and Benelux countries to strengthen the European Union. “Through joint efforts, for example, linking electricity markets, strengthening innovation ecosystems, and building networks between universities, we can overcome the limitations of size that smaller economies often face. By connecting our communities and markets more closely, we create a larger ecosystem in which companies can grow and compete globally. Expanding this cooperation further, particularly with partners in the Benelux region, would unlock even greater opportunities for shared growth in the EU.”

The event highlighted the growing relevance of flexible and targeted cooperation frameworks such as the Benelux, particularly in a rapidly evolving geopolitical environment. Participants stressed that Europe must respond with greater ambition, stronger political will, and enhanced coordination to remain competitive and resilient.

The Baltic Assembly welcomed the increasing focus on reducing administrative barriers, improving the functioning of the internal market, and fostering innovation. In particular, discussions addressed the need to facilitate labour mobility, support business expansion across borders, and ensure access to investment for European companies.

In this context, it was noted that regional cooperation formats can serve as testing grounds for new solutions, helping to advance EU-wide policies more efficiently. The Benelux model, with its strong tradition of trust and practical problem-solving, was highlighted as a valuable example

During the Session, it was also pointed out that the importance of strengthening Europe’s economic and security foundations. In light of current geopolitical challenges, participants agreed that deeper cooperation, investment in defence and innovation, and a renewed confidence in Europe’s capabilities are essential.

The Baltic Assembly reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with partners across Europe to promote sustainable growth, competitiveness, and resilience, while contributing to a stronger and more united European Union.
