Baltic Assembly stresses the need for furthering scientific collaboration at the 5th CERN Baltic Conference

On 14-16 October 2025, the Baltic Assembly attended the 5th CERN Baltic Conference, which was held in Kaunas, Lithuania. The scope of the conference included presentations of the most recent results of the Baltic scientific community in CERN related fields of research, as well as dedicated sessions for the discussion of national and regional level scientific policy, higher education and industry engagement topics.

While addressing the participants, Saulius Čaplinskas, Vice Chair of the Health, Welfare and Family Committee, stressed that cooperation with CERN reflects the Baltic States’ shared commitment to science, innovation and progress. The CERN Baltic Group stands as a strong example of regional collaboration built on knowledge and joint ambition.

The Baltic Assembly continues to support the creation of the Advanced Particle Therapy Centre for the Baltic States, an initiative with the potential to improve cancer treatment and enhance research capacity. Governments are encouraged to prioritise funding for a full feasibility study and explore EU co-financing to move the project forward.

Saulius Čaplinskas stressed that further investment in science is essential by stating that “the Baltic States are on the frontline of Europe’s defence of democracy and freedom. Yes, investment in science is an investment in health, human dignity and the future of our societies. But investing in science is also an act of resilience. It strengthens our societies, fosters trust and reinforces the values that unite us. In times of uncertainty, science is a bridge that unites people.”
