On 17-18 October, the Baltic Assembly attended the Inter-Parliamentary Meeting on Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency organised by the European Forum for Renewable Energy Sources (EUFORES) and the Danish Parliament, which took place in Copenhagen, Denmark. The event brought together members of the European Commission and Parliament, national governments and leading energy companies to discuss the future of Europe regarding energy transition, energy security and regional cooperation.
President of EUFORES Nicolás González Casares stated that “energy security is the future of Europe!” Discussions underlined that the path of Europe toward climate neutrality depends on decisive political action, stronger cross-border connections and technological innovation, for example modernising energy grids across Europe to avoid energy waste and stabilise prices. Additionally, it was agreed upon that energy is not only an environmental matter but also an issue of economic stability and national defence. The need to reduce dependence on fossil fuels was repeated throughout the sessions, along with the urgency to expand renewable capacity through wind, solar and ocean energy.
Special attention was given to offshore wind energy and cooperation in the Baltic and North Seas, which were recognised as areas that are crucial for green energy transition and independence. Participants proposed the creation of a permanent coordination structure, for example a secretariat, for the Baltic and North Sea regions to ensure effective long-term planning and management of offshore projects.
The meeting also covered social and economic aspects of the green transition, including the new EU Emissions Trading System 2 and the Social Climate Fund. Discussions highlighted the importance of supporting low-income households and guaranteeing that new climate policies bring benefits to all citizens.
During the meeting the Baltic Assembly was represented by President Jānis Vucāns and Vice President Timo Suslov.
