On 28-30 October 2025, the members of the Baltic Assembly participated in the 77th Session of the Nordic Council “The Nordics together – the Nordic advantage and unity in troubled times” held in Stockholm, Sweden.
President of the Baltic Assembly Jānis Vucāns addressed the Session by highlighting that in an era of growing uncertainty, regional unity is our greatest advantage: “One of the most significant examples of Baltic unity is our joint progress toward synchronising our electricity grids with the continental European network. After decades of dependence on the Russian and Belarusian systems, in February 2025, we gained full control of our electricity networks. This milestone strengthens the energy security of the Baltic Sea region and the EU as a whole. More than a technical accomplishment, this long-awaited achievement stands as a powerful symbol of regional solidarity. It shows that when we act together, we are capable of achieving what once seemed impossible”.
He also highlighted that over the past decades, the Baltic-Nordic cooperation has evolved to a well-established partnership that delivers practical results. The Baltic Assembly and the Nordic Council have worked side by side to turn this partnership into action, addressing issues such as increasing the resilience of our societies to disinformation, energy security and sustainability, transport connectivity and standing firmly in unwavering support for Ukraine.
Lastly, referring to what makes the “Nordic advantage” or the ability to act together, build trust across borders, make decisions grounded in shared values and defend the rules-based international order, the President emphasised that the “Baltic advantage” comes from a deep understanding of what it takes to safeguard freedom and independence. “Together, these advantages form a powerful combination, and we are proud that the Baltic Assembly continues to contribute to the spirit of unity that defines the Baltic partnership with the Nordic countries,” Vucāns concluded.
The parliamentarians also had the opportunity to hear the address of the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen. She highlighted that a lasting peace relies on a strong and independent Ukraine and that Europe will stand by Ukraine for as long as it takes: “If we want lasting peace on our continent, Europe must have the capacity to deter any future Russian aggression”. She also emphasised the role of the Nordic region as a driving force for preparedness and societal security.
During the discussions, a broad range of topics was addressed, focusing on Nordic cooperation in areas such as security, societal preparedness, freedom of expression, the strengthening of democracy, and the promotion of the green transition, as well as a potential revision of the Helsinki Treaty, often referred to as the Nordic constitution. The Baltic Assembly also took part in the Nordic Council Presidium and the Chairs of the Committees’ Seminar for International Guests, titled “Northern Europe in Europe’s New Geopolitical Context and Its Relations with the USA.” During the seminar, participants emphasised that the fight for freedom resides in the hearts and minds of citizens, and that as Europe leads the free world, it must remain steadfast and resilient in the face of every challenge.
At the 77th Session of the Nordic Council, the Baltic Assembly was represented by President Jānis Vucāns and Vice President Giedrius Drukteinis.
