The Presidium of the Baltic Assembly adopts a Statement about violations by the regime of Alexander Lukashenko

On May 26, 2021 the Presidium of the Baltic Assembly adopted a Statement regarding the violations by the regime of Alexander Lukashenko.

Condemnation of the outright aggression and violation of the international law

"We, the members of the Presidium of the Baltic Assembly, condemn the recent outright aggression and a clear violation of the international law executed by the regime of Alexander Lukashenko. Using a fighter aircraft to intercept a civilian flight is unprecedented, unjustified and incomprehensible. With this violent act, the regime has played with the privacy, security and trust of the civilians in the respective flight. We join the view that this is a straightforward reminder of the illegitimacy of authority that the administration of Alexander Lukashenko is claiming."

Call for immediate inquiry and economic sanctions

The Presidium of the Baltic Assembly joins in the call for immediate inquiry of this event by the International Civil Aviation Organisation, a ban on all overflight of Belarus and more economic sanctions on the regime of Alexander Lukashenko. "Freedom, democracy, rule of law and civil society, and the plurality of information are fundamentally important; therefore, we continue to show our full support for the people of Belarus in their struggle for a legitimate leader of their country. The recent actions of the regime of Alexander Lukashenko are a clear sign to the EU and the whole international community that the illegitimate administration in Minsk has no respect for the international community and people's dignity, and this must stop."
